Why Big Sean Sucks and Why You Should Not Like Him At All

This is Big Sean in his cool outfit. He likes to be like wow, I have a cool medallion that costs a lot of money. I won't get into the morality of ya know a lot of poverty in the world and blah blah blah because that's probably not within his depth of field. What I do appreciate is his little like, alternative watch he has on there. That's pretty cool.

Okay enough screwing around, Chris Brown is on your album. Not cool. In a sense I can't even take what you have to say seriously. Second of all, your beats is whack. Get off your computer a bit. Stop working with Kanye chode West and Wiz chode Khalifa and come on, Chiddy Bang? And people, don't think I stopped listening to the album at this song. I listened to the whole thing. I just had enough material to write this much from the first two songs. These lyrics below are not even close to the worst (These are: (shiz). yuck

"Ok, now where that alcohol
You aint even got to ask
Cause I'mma drink it all like, like its my last
She a 7 in the face, but a 10 in the ass
She even look better by the end of my glass"

Like, how much of a disgrace of a person are you? Yeah, I guess if say one were drunk, like really really drunk, they might think in that like, sort of inebriated process, ...ugh more alcohol, not that attractive chick, sort of not that attractive chick, hot chick. Chya, I just finished all that alcohol I was just bragging about. Dude, plus we're still like juniors in high school. Getting drunk and objectifying women is still cool because we're 16 and impressionable and watch MTV and listen to music like....oh.. right, like this. Suck it "big" Sean.

The Glory of Hip Hop

Our hip-hop selection has been slim to none, so I want to start off in the DJ realm (not to be confused with DJ Realm). One of the best 'trip-hop' albums ever made, DJ Shadow's Entroducing, is known to most if not all hip-hop enthusiasts as one of the greatest and most influential albums ever made. DJ Shadow's ability to mix jazz and funk and a seemingly infinite amount of samples is unparalleled. Ironically this album came out around the time hip-hop took an exponentially accelerating dive down into the ignorant abyss of gangster rap, hence one of the songs' titles being, "Why Hip Hop Sucks In 1996," where the only vocal sample echoes, "It's the money." Brevity is the soul of wit, as they say.

Here's a classic off the album: "Building Steam With A Grain Of Salt"

What is probably even more relevant from an education standpoint is the movie Scratch (Watch it! It's awesome). It details the origin of hip-hop, its acting as a medium for unity and social progression among the black community, and unfortunately its deviation from culture to what is today's "rap' or "hip-hop", which mostly consists of the manipulating, money-grubbing corporations promoting "artists" who facilitate the elevation of topics such as: money, womanizing, gang violence etc. Or, more aptly put, OneManArmy of Binary Star states in the song "Honest Expressions" : "Hip-hop, and then there's hip-pop... You got the Top 40 version of hip-hop, ya know what I mean?" There are many problems with the way rap has evolved not simply just because one musically pretentious person thinks it sucks . But hey political music commentary could take up an entire blog, so I'll leave that out!

Work Drugs - "Rad Racer"

I like the name of the band a lot because it sums up life.

Jonsi's Back... Albeit Lamely

Matt Damon may have become a sellout solely because he's in that "We Bought a Zoo" movie that makes me nauseous when I see its trailer play. But maybe it was when he appeared in The Adjustment Bureau. Cause that shit sucked. But one good thing about the Boston's boy Matt Damon becoming a pit of a poo is that Jonsi just made a soundtrack for his horrible movie. Yeah buddy.

Blind Pilot

Another great song, this time from the Portland-based band Blind Pilot.

The Roots

Surprisingly, they do more than play for Jimmy Kimmel. The Roots have produced yet another gem with the release of their 13th studio album titled 'Undun' (apparently they don't subscribe to the theory that good music takes time). The critically acclaimed concept album dives deep into the mind of the troubled fictional character Redford Stephens. The individual tracks most accurately reflect journal entries, and when combined, the album depicts a story of a man's unlucky circumstance - and how his reactions led to his demise. Here's 'The Otherside' ft Bilal & Greg Porn.

I feel low, but it feels alright

Yet another band out from Canada, Handsome Furs' album Sound Kapital came out this past summer. The album took me a little while to get used to being that electronic music is still a bit foreign to my ears, but now I jam to this on the daily. Check this:

And to convince you to download the whole album, listen to dis: Serve the People

Nostalgia for your ears.

Pagoda and I, as you can see, love nostalgia. We seem to almost thrive off of its unhealthy energies. Anyway, one of my favorite MM songs dates back to my high school days:

Sometimes all I really want to feel is love
Sometimes I'm angry that I feel so angry
Sometimes my feelings get in the way
Of what I really feel I needed to say
If you stand in a circle
Then you'll all have a back to bite

I think the song has pretty teen-angst, archetypal shit going on here, and Brock pulls it off so it's fuggin' sweet. From their EP Interstate 8, "Edit the Sad Parts" is one of the few MM songs that I've come across where I'm equally as impressed with the lyrics as I am with the music (most MM songs are more lyrically concentrated in my opinion).

Pay attention because I just spent 10 minutes writing this 'bishes'.

AIH is back .. with one song

Australian band Architecture in Helsinki came out with 2.5 good albums before creating an almost portfolio-spoiling piece o' poop album, Moment Bends. I like this song though. One song don't make an album dough, so don't even bother illegally downloading it.

Top 10 Wes Anderson Soundtrack Songs

I once read somewhere that liking Wes Anderson is one of the whitest things you can do. Guilty.

Here's my favorite 10 songs from some of his movies. I was almost going to put in a Cat Stevens song because it is so memorable in Rushmore, but my strong dislike for the guy's music couldn't let me do it.

1. The Who - A Quick One, While He's Away
2. The Creation - Making Time
3. Nico - These Days
4. Van Morrison - Everyone
5.
6. The Kinks - This Time Tomorrow
7.

8. The Zombies - The Way I Feel Inside
9. The Clash - Police & Thieves
10. John Lennon - Oh! Yoko

Listen to Dom. Probably not even old enough to buy a beer, but old enough to make me... like them. They're also from Worcester which makes them all legends in my book. Not to mention the song title, Burn Bridges, is my favorite thing to do ever. May the bridges I burn light the way.

The Indie/Electronic Combo

It's obvious how indie rock has influenced rap music (see Jay Z or Kanye West for examples). Another genre that also has been combining a lot with indie is electronic music. The classic example of this is The Go! Team. They were what turned me on to electronic music, and are one of the most well known bands in the genre--probably because of all the commercials they're featured in. Anyway here is a song released in 2011. Give it a listen...

P.S. Here is a link to the some of the best indie songs of 2011. Definitely take it upon yourself to listen to a few of these...

I love Beirut

One of my favorite bands by far, Beirut did this extremely cool film for La Blogotheque performing their entire second album The Flying Cup Club (2007). Zach Condon has one of the most rich and beautiful voices my young ears have heard. The video was filmed in only a few takes, but I couldn't find them all in one clip, unfortunately, so the direction can't be appreciated as much. It's an oldie but goodie.

In addition to being the art director (whatever that means) and an integral part musically in Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Robbie Guertin, along with CYHSY's Tyler Sargent, and a nice lady named Annie Hart make up the Brooklyn band, Uninhabitable Mansions. Obvioulsy they're from Brooklyn. They've come out with a single and an LP, Naturee is a Taker (2010), which has this catchy song, "The Speed is Deceiving"

Wilco!

For those of you who haven't checked out any of the "Tiny Desk" concerts put on by NPR, you should right now. They are amazing and intimate and provide a surprisingly great acoustic setting for the bands/artists that have performed. Here is one of my favorite bands performing some of their songs off their new album "Whole Love". 'Dese guys can Jam

So some pretty Lady showed this song to me.

They're from Denver. I hear Denver is not opposed to "doing pot". Good for you R E A L M A G I C. And, I know you guys get a lot of shit for the spaces in between the letters of your band's name, but let's face it, you totally deserve it. Just spell it normally. Purposefully incorrectly punctuating your band name just to be "off beat" isn't off beat simply because of your intent. Keep the music the same, but seriously, just close the gaps. It's annoying.

My Morning Jacket's Top 8 Covers

Jim James may have a way with words, but that hasn't stopped him from covering his fair share of songs. In my opinion, My Morning Jacket lays claim to the best covers around. Here's my list of Jim James and company's top covers. In no particular order...

1. My Morning Jacket - "Rocket Man" (Elton John)
2. My Morning Jacket - "It Makes No Difference" (The Band)

4. My Morning Jacket - "Take My Breath Away" (Berlin)
5. My Morning Jacket - "Man in Me" (Bob Dylan)
6. My Morning Jacket - "Always on My Mind" (Brenda Lee/Presley/Nelson)

Nostalgia

Born Ruffians came out with Red, Yellow, and Blue in 2008, and one of our favorite songs off the album is "Badonkadonkey". They juxtapose a goofy, almost overly simplistic sound with lyrics that are a bit on the darker side, which creates the option of listening to it just for fun. Unfortunately their second album, Say It, was produced by someone else, the producer for Modest Mouse I believe. It's more polished, and the boyish garage-band sound is completely absent, which let's be honest, sucks.

More importantly, this song is filled with nostalgia for anyone who has gotten sick and tired of their girlfriend. Senior year, anyone? But seriously how does Luke Lalonde have such insights into all our high school experiences? ----

"And if you get squished I'll find another you,
And if you get squashed I'll find another you,
It won't be hard to find another one like you,
Another you, another you"

Real Estate - "It's Real"

The New Jersey indie rock/dream-pop band released a new album entitled Days on September 27th. The album has garnered just as must positive feedback as their first self-titled 'bum. Here's the first single off of Days, which uniquely enough, is called "It's Real".

Look for a little more refined sound on this album, but the same unique guitar and consistency amongst tracks that makes Real Estate great.
